Beachcombing Adventure: What to Look For

Make collecting materials part of the fun! Head to the beach with a bucket or tote bag and see what you can find. Keep an eye out for:

  • Small to medium driftwood pieces – curved, flat, or twisted sticks all work well.

  • Sea glass – smooth, frosted pieces in shades of green, blue, brown, and clear.

  • Shells – especially ones with holes (perfect for hanging), interesting patterns, or unique shapes.

  • Tiny pebbles or coral fragments – great for accents and texture.

Let your kids hunt for the “coolest” pieces. Turn it into a game—who can find the biggest shell or the smoothest piece of sea glass?

DIY Project #1: Driftwood Picture Frame

Driftwood Picture Frame

Materials:

  • Driftwood (about 10–15 small pieces)

  • A plain picture frame (any size)

  • Hot glue gun or strong craft adhesive

  • Optional: sandpaper to smooth sharp edges

Instructions:

  1. Prep Your Driftwood
Shake off any sand and, if needed, gently sand down any rough spots.

  2. Plan Your Layout
Lay your driftwood around the frame and play with the arrangement—overlapping, zig-zag, or straight lines—whatever looks best!

  3. Glue It Down
Once you're happy with the design, glue each piece in place. Be generous with the glue but keep it neat.

  4. Let It Dry
Give the glue time to set. Then pop in your favorite beach photo and enjoy your custom island-style frame!

DIY Project #2: Sea Glass Wind Chime

Sea Glass Wind Chime

Materials:

  • Sea glass (about 20–30 pieces)

  • Fishing line, thin rope and/or thin wire

  • A sturdy piece of driftwood or a metal ring for the top

  • Scissors

  • Optional: small shells or beads for extra flair

Instructions:

  1. Sort & Plan
Lay out your sea glass by size or color. Try out a few arrangements on a table before you start tying.

  2. Cut Your Strings
Cut 4–6 pieces of fishing line, about 12–18 inches long.

  3. Tie or Glue the Glass
Tie or glue sea glass pieces along each line, spacing them a few inches apart. If some pieces have holes, thread through them. For others, wrap the line tightly and knot.

  4. Assemble & Hang
Tie each finished line to your driftwood or metal ring. Hang your wind chime where the breeze will catch it—by a window, on a porch, or in the garden.
